Dust Off The Shortboards!

YESSSSSSS!! Write it down folks - Tuesday May 18 was the end of a horrific flat spell! I had been watching the forecast for a few days and it was looking like it was going to have potential to be a fun day on Tuesday - I eluded to this in my last post - but I was reluctant to express any real excitement. Tuesday morning came and there was some swell but the wind was kind of sideways still so it didn't start off so promising. Laura and I checked it early and it just wasn't really working so we went to Oceanea's Bistro for some breakfast then checked it again - still not ready. We were getting a little frustrated at this point so we went home and got changed and went to the gym and had a workout. After the gym we took a look at the conditions online and, although the wind was still out of the South it had shifted from South Southeast to South Southwest so we started getting optimistic that it would swing around as forecast and go West and clean up the surf. We got our wetsuits our and I pulled out my Imagine 5'8" UnRetro fish and set up the fins. We got the car packed up and drove up to the beach and saw a bunch of people in the water or on the beach getting ready to paddle out into the beautiful waist to chest high clean waves! Woo Hoo! We opted for another spot in order to avoid the crowd at that spot and surfed with 3 other guys for about an hour then by ourselves for another 2 hours or so until our arms were shot. It wasn't epic Hatteras surf by any stretch of the imagination but there were still open faces to ride and get some speed on and make some turns and it was easy take offs on smooth faces so it was fun. After going home getting a bite to eat and a little recharge of the batteries I paddled back out with Andy, Stuart, and Ken and caught more waves until dark. Andy was on his Imagine 6'1" Pocket Rocket, Stuart was originally out on a shortboard but was on an SUP when I got back out and Ken was rockin' the boogie board - so we were quite a diverse little group out there but all of us catching waves - fun! We went back to Oceanea's Bistro for $1 Taco Tuesday and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer - perfect way to end a great day! Alas it was just a taste however because yesterday the waves were gone gone gone. Laura and I had the day off from work but couldn't find a decent wave to save our lives. We did finally paddle out in Frisco on longboards and caught some waves but it was mostly frustrating - gutless mushy bumpy closed out waves. We gave it a shot for about an hour then were over it and went home and made a KILLER dinner that made up for it. Sorry no pics for this post but my waterproof camera is dead meat and the battery on the other camera was dead so Laura couldn't get any shots from our evening session - I told you in the last post - I must be the worst blogger in the world!
